New Everest Speed Record Set with KTS

Mr. Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa broke the world record for a Mt. Everest speed climb, reaching the top of the world’s highest mountain in 10 hours, 56 minutes, and 46 seconds. The previous record was held by Mr. Pemba Dorjie Sherpa at 12 hours, 45 minutes. What enabled Lhakpa Sherpa’s success was the Kahtoola® Traction System (KTS), which he used throughout the entire climb. He wore lightweight boots to reach the top of the South Col and changed to large insulated boots at that point. Kahtoola, Inc., does not recommend this. Due to the steep, icy Lhotse face, other more technical equipment is typically used. However, Lhaka Gelu’s confidence in his KTS enabled him to move more quickly than he would have without them. Also, he did use fixed lines for protection against a fall.
