Kahtoola Sponsors 2006 U.S. National Snowshoe RACE Series & Championships

January 2006 — Kahtoola announces the sponsorship of the 2005–2006 U.S. National Snowshoe Race Series & Championships, a series of 20 qualifying races that take place across the nation and culminate in the National Championships March 24–26, 2006 at Bolton Valley Resort in Bolton, Vermont. The race series is overseen by the U.S. Snowshoe Association. Over 200 of the country’s finest endurance athletes, representing 20–30 states, are expected to converge on Bolton Valley for 2 days of exciting snowshoe events. Kahtoola will provide race-day demos and extra prizes to races within the series that offer a “snow traction” division.

u.s. snowshoe association logoAccording to Kahtoola founder Danny Giovale, “Our partnership with the U.S. Snowshoe Association provides us with an opportunity to speak directly to our target audience. By supporting the race series, we are able to connect with avid winter enthusiasts who enjoy getting outside to run, hike or race on snow. Since many of the snowshoe races take place on hard pack conditions, we feel our Kahtoola Traction System (KTS) is a great alternative to racers who may not need or want the flotation of a snowshoe deck. We are providing race-day demos and additional prizes to those race organizers who chose to offer an alternative category in snow traction systems.”

New Everest Speed Record Set with KTS

Mr. Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa broke the world record for a Mt. Everest speed climb, reaching the top of the world’s highest mountain in 10 hours, 56 minutes, and 46 seconds. The previous record was held by Mr. Pemba Dorjie Sherpa at 12 hours, 45 minutes. What enabled Lhakpa Sherpa’s success was the Kahtoola® Traction System (KTS), which he used throughout the entire climb. He wore lightweight boots to reach the top of the South Col and changed to large insulated boots at that point. Kahtoola, Inc., does not recommend this. Due to the steep, icy Lhotse face, other more technical equipment is typically used. However, Lhaka Gelu’s confidence in his KTS enabled him to move more quickly than he would have without them. Also, he did use fixed lines for protection against a fall.
