December 2006 - Get Wings

Kahtoola FLIGHTsystem and FLIGHTboot Challenge change winter trail running

Kahtoola's first FLIGHTboot Challenge took place on November 17, 2006 in Leadville, Colorado. Twenty-eight runners participated in this early season (race), clad in FLIGHTboots overtop their trail-running shoes. The FLIGHTboots kept their feet warm and dry and allowed (full flexibility) while running over the snow.

Many of the racers clicked in and out of FLIGHTdecks, Kahtoola's evolution of the snowshoe featuring a simple step-in binding, which allowed racers to fine-tune their efficiency by adapting to the changing terrain throughout the snow-covered course, (using the) FLIGHTdeck to add flotation and ease in fresh untracked and unpacked snow. The hardy last place finisher in the 12K race was the sole snowshoer in the bunch and promised he'd use the FLIGHTboots next time.

The second FLIGHTboot Challenge will be Saturday, December 16 at the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center 10 miles north of Leadville, Colorado, including a 5K FunFLIGHT and 12K MountainFLIGHT race, with case prizes awarded to top placers in the 12K race.

Snowshoes are not required and FLIGHTboot demos are available on a first-come first-served basis. Event starts at 10:00 a.m. at the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center, 10 miles north of Leadville on Highway 24. Awards and gourmet lunch to follow the race.
