Kahtoola's component system for winter travel might be the perfect solution.

December 30, 2006 - KAHTOOLA FLIGHTSYSTEM

You like to do winter hikes or uphill workouts at ski areas, you want warmth and traction for your feet, but your heavy boots and/or snowshoes are just overkill. Kahtoola's component system for winter travel might be the perfect solution.

Start with the system's foundation, an ankle-high bootie - it's made of 3-millimeter Neoprene reinforced with Hypalon - that snugs over running shoes or day hikers. Stainless-steel cleats around the sole's perimeter give plenty of grip on ice and snow. If you often venture into powder, add on the FLIGHTdeck (aka lightweight snowshoes); the bootie's forefoot cleats click right in, so you don't have to hassle with straps and bindings. You might not take flight, but you will float.
