Covering November/December 2003 & January/February 2004 - Lightweight Traction System

The Kahtoola Traction System (KTS) was invented and developed by an innovative climber who was inspired after surviving a 300-foot fall down a steep snow slope. Better footwear traction could have prevented the fall, but he didn't wear traditional crampons that day because they're too heavy and didn't fit well on the lightweight footwear he used. KTS was designed to be lightweight and less aggressive than conventional climbing crampons. The KTS comprises a rigid toe and heel piece with a total of ten 3/4 inch long traction spikes. The two pieces are connected by a flexible multi-ply spring steel bar. This LeafSpring Extender Bar makes the KTS highly flexible and adaptable to a wide range of footwear and uses. At 1 pound 3 ounces, the KTS weighs less than half of traditional climbing crampons. They easily strap on to anything from snow boots to running shoes.
