Our boots crunch through wind-tufted snow blown randomly against the red, straight-up sidewalls of the Kaibab Trail. We're glad for the crampons because a misstep here would be fatal.
Helen and I started early enough, just barely. My friend, visiting from dental school ("School for the Dentally Gifted," she always says), had never hiked down the abyss - certainly not in winter. That was reserved for crazy people who wanted to try out brand-new traction devices for snow, in my case locally-made Kahtoolas...
