Kahtoola has created the best approach crampon I’ve tried.

For whatever reasons, approach crampons haven’t received much attention from climbing companies. The few models that have made it to the market are heavy, bulky, and insecure. This lack of innovation left room for a new company to fill an important niche. Kahtoola (the name means “directly” in Tibetan) has created the best approach crampon I’ve tried. Their Innovative Traction System (ITS) fits securely on any shoe or boot, including running and rock shoes, with a simple strap system. The ITS is a 10-point crampon made of 7000-series aluminum, with short points (3/4” long) that provide plenty of grip on icy terrain. The front and rear sections of the ITS are connected by a doubled stainless steel bar that allows shoes to flex naturally. No tools are required to adjust the crampons, and it only takes a minute to customize the fit. Given the performance, minimal weight (20 oz /567 g) and quality construction, the [$139] price represents an excellent buy.
