Kahtoola KTS Traction System
Do an adventure race at elevation or in the winter, and you’ll need crampons. But most are bulky, inflexible, and incompatible with footwear made for speed. Kahtoola’s flexible traction system innovatively mates with anything from running shoes to snow boots and won’t put a hitch in your gait. How fast are they? In May of this year, Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa used them when making the fastest-ever ascent of Everest from base camp — just less than 11 hours. Also great for winter trail runs.

Kahtoola’s 10-point system finds a smart medium...
March 2002 - Adventure Gear: From ice axes for alpine traverses to dry bags for amphibious crossings, if you're going to be an adventure racer, you've got to have the right stuff. We went to the top players in the sport to find out what they're using - here are some of their picks for the best, most durable adventure gear on the market.
Kahtoola KTS Traction System. Until recently, running and trekking in the snow and ice forced a choice between one of two often imperfect options in traction systems: For the fleet-footed traveler, the rigid, full-foot, 12-point crampons of mountaineers can be overkill, while instep crampons’ often bottle-cap-like in design-can make every step a leap of faith. But Kahtoola’s 10-point system finds a smart medium, and adventure racers everywhere are carrying them for their lightweight (10 ounces of 7000 series aluminum), flexible frame and compatibility with running shoes and boots alike.
